Hike - 2025-02-23, Harriman State Park

This 10-mile hike was conducted with my friend Johnny in New York's Harriman State Park. Partially, it was a training hike to get some miles of trail under our feet in preparation for a half marathon trail run we're participating in later this year. It was also a good reason to get me out with my 360 degree video camera to see if I couldn't learn how to use it well to market my photography hikes with Slievemore Editions. The first half of the footage, the particularly beautiful part that took place walking along the shore of Silver Mine Lake during sunrise was far too over exposed. The rest of it is alright.

I was able to capture a few images I enjoy. Some are simply of Johnny with his rucksack walking ahead of me, while a few other shots I enjoy feature a particularly striking tree, the narrow, snow-laden trail with the rolling hills and Hudson River out in the distance, and a portrait of Johnny in the William Brien Memorial Shelter, which closes out the above video.

This wasn't the most eventful hike, and it didn't present with the most grandiose scenery. I regret not slowing down to make more pictures of the patches of Mountain Laurel we hiked through, as they were particularly nice. There’s something about the sensation of being in a near tunnel of foliage that makes me feel smaller in a good way. As though I could live, sheltered in a patch of Mountain Laurel, jumping from leaf to leaf. It was a good, challenging hike thanks to the elevation profile of the route I had mapped out for us. We loaded up our packs and set out, keeping a decent pace despite the snow being covered with a thick layer of ice in many parts. We planned ahead and were each prepared with a set of micro-spikes, which ultimately made the trail much more enjoyable than it otherwise might have been.
